The Diamond Ship

The greatest pirate treasure story never told. Until now.

A Historic Feature Screenplay

Based on extraordinary true events during the years of 1718 - 1721

When enslaved men and women are freed by British pirates, they join their former captors to hunt down the greatest diamond treasure in history.

Set in 1721, 'The Diamond Ship' unveils the untold saga of enslaved men and women who, after a decade of brutal diamond mining under Portuguese rule, find an unlikely liberation at the hands of British pirates. This is not merely a tale of rescue, but a profound narrative of transformation where true justice reigns supreme: the freed individuals swap chains for for agency, joining their former saviours on a daring mission to reclaim the very diamond treasure they were forced to extract. The diamonds they seize turn out to be the single most valuable haul of treasure in pirate history.

This project flips conventional expectations, focusing not on blame, but on the inspiring rise to freedom, the forging of new identities, and an extraordinary alliance between the oppressed and their most unexpected allies.

Narrative and Themes

  • Blends four years of rigorous research by an award-winning Master Storyteller and journalist with emotionally driven narratives
  • Based on real maritime accounts buried for over 300 years -  this blend of documentary and scripted drama by ana ward winning journalist shares untold human story behind the greatest treasure ever taken at sea — not as legend, but as lived experience.
  • At its heart is a true story of a most unusual alliance that not only changed lives, but shifted history: slaves found liberty through the most unlikely ally: a pirate crew.
  • Equally potent is a reversal rarely seen in pirate cinema: enslaved men and women reclaiming the very wealth they were forced to extract.
  • The pirate narrative of a man seeking pardon and a quiet life is deeply rooted in historical documents and borders on documentary
  • The slaves’ whose names remain unknown work as a narrative to explore hidden faces and lost names of people who toiled in servitude to enrich those in power
  • Both narratives merge where Seegar and Shaku – both characters embroiled in circumstances so beyond their control that their only protection is to mask themselves – find benefit in mutual conspiracy and a realignment of moral stakes to quest for the recapture of the diamonds.
  • This diamond quest is seen differently by different participants, ranging from greed to natural justice, revenge or identity.
  • This project explores and exemplifies challenges of circumstance, identity and morality through an ongoing forging and dissolution of unlikely alliances in order to bring a very human aspect to events that unwittingly shift history yet remain shrouded in secrecy - uncovering personal stories inside major historical events.
  • Set at the collapsing edge of the Golden Age of piracy in the early 1700s, The Diamond Ship reframes piracy not as romantic legend but as a volatile historical pressure point where empire, slavery, and emerging ideas of freedom collide. Drawing closely on maritime diaries and archival sources over 300 years old, the film restores erased lives to a critical moment when personal identities were reassessed in an environment of impossible choices, and global power structures were violently renegotiated to force the beginning of the end of the Golden Age Of Piracy
  • It is the story of the single most valuable heist in the history of true crime
